Bored with yet-another plain ol’ turkey sandwich? This recipe in Nancy Clark’s Sports Nutrition Guidebook is a perfect way to add a little extra pizazz to your lunch. It offers a nice balance of carbs and protein, so is an easy-to-digest option to eat a few hours before exercising to fuel your workout. For the best results, use a vegetable-peeler (Y-peeler, if you have one) to slice the apple thinly. This makes it easier to chew but still preserves the apple’s crispness. Swap out the bread, if desired, with any other whole grain product such as a roll or wrap.
Ingredients:
1-2 tablespoon cranberry sauce
2 slices of 100% Whole Grain Bread
1 ounce (30 g) cheddar cheese
2 ounces (60 g) turkey breast, sliced
¼ of a thinly sliced apple (recommended Granny Smith)
Preparation Steps
1.Spread cranberry sauce on the whole-grain bread.
2.Add sliced cheese, turkey breast, and very thinly sliced apple.
3.Place the top piece of bread or wrap the sandwich to complete your creation.
Optional: briefly heat it up in the microwave for added warmth.
